Crossword Genius

Where the hairdresser took Sarah on (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

salon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where the hairdresser took' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'sarah on' is the wordplay.
'sarah' becomes 'Sal' (Sally is a common pet form of Sarah).
'sal'+'on'='SALON'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for salon that I've seen before include "Literary gathering" , "Beauty parlour" , "Establishment of beauty specialist or hairdresser" , "Hairdresser's establishment" , "Room where beautician works" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
