Where the slugs may spell danger? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

garden

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where the slugs' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'spell danger?' is the wordplay.
'spell' indicates an anagram (I've seen 'spells' mean this (I've seen this in other clues)).
'danger' anagrammed gives 'GARDEN'.

'may' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for garden that I've seen before include "See 13" , "Green space attached to a house" , "fertile region" , "Cultivate plants, etc" , "Land round house" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
