Crossword Genius

Wild storm engulfs the centre of Newbury (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rabid

'wild' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'storm engulfs the centre of newbury' is the wordplay.
'storm' becomes 'raid' (both can mean to break into a place).
'engulfs' indicates putting letters inside.
'the centre of' says to take the centre.
The central letter of 'newbury' is 'b'.
'raid' going around 'b' is 'RABID'.

(Other definitions for rabid that I've seen before include "Affected by hydrophobia" , "Fanatical, infected" , "Fanatical - hydrophobic" , "Burning" , "Ferocious" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
