Crossword Genius

Write sad poem the Spanish say is trite, ultimately (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elegise

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'write' is the definition.
(I know that elegise is a more specific form of the action poetise)

'the spanish say is trite ultimately' is the wordplay.
'the spanish' becomes 'el' ('the' in Spanish).
'say' becomes 'eg' (both can mean for example).
'ultimately' indicates one should take the final letters.
The last letter of 'trite' is 'e'.
'el'+'eg'+'is'+'e'='ELEGISE'

'sad poem' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for elegise that I've seen before include "Write mournfully" , "To write a funeral song" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
