'curassow' can be an answer for 'bird' (I've seen this before). I am unsure of the 'big' bit.
'dog-like pig' is the wordplay.
'dog' becomes 'cur' (both can mean a despicable person).
'like' becomes 'as'.
'pig' becomes 'sow' (I've seen this in another clue).
'cur'+'as'+'sow'='CURASSOW'
