Crossword Genius

Break a code with new cleric (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

deacon

'cleric' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'break a code with new' is the wordplay.
'break' indicates anagramming the letters.
'with' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'new' becomes 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament).
'a'+'code'='acode'
'acode' is an anagram of 'deaco'.
'deaco'+'n'='DEACON'

(Other definitions for deacon that I've seen before include "Minister below a priest" , "Church post" , "Churchman" , "Cleric - canoed (anag)" , "Junior minister" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
