Ross

I believe the answer is:

snipe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'this bird?' is the definition.
(snipe is a kind of bird)

'can the poles make pie' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'poles' could be 'sn' (North and South poles) and 'sn' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'pie' is 'ipe' which is within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'with' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for snipe that I've seen before include "Fire from cover; bird" , "Game bird" , "To pick off soldiers, say" , "From concealed position, shoot" , "Shoot from place of concealment" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
