Crossword Genius

Crikey! A boxing contest for a social butterfly (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gadabout

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'social butterfly' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'crikey a boxing contest for a' is the wordplay.
'crikey' becomes 'gad' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'a boxing contest' becomes 'bout' (I've seen this before).
'for' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'bout' put after 'a' is 'about'.
'gad'+'about'='GADABOUT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gadabout that I've seen before include "Pleasure-seeker" , "Rover" , "restless type" , "restless sort" , "Person who wanders aimlessly in search of pleasure" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
