Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rugby union

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'game' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'an old school get-together' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'an' could be 'i' (Roman numeral for one) and 'i' is located in the answer.
'old' could be 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English) and 'o' is located in the answer.
'school' could be 'rugby' (English private school) and 'rugby' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rugby union that I've seen before include "activity for hooligans?" , "Fifteen-a-side game" , "Sort of football" , "Fifteen-a-side sport - Olympic event in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924" , "Fifteen player sport ..." .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
