Ross

I believe the answer is:

enamel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'glossy appearance' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'fish retired chap netted' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'chap' could be 'mel' and 'mel' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ena' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for enamel that I've seen before include "Smooth hard paint" , "Ale men (anag.)" , "canine protection?" , "protective coat" , "Hard substance covering teeth" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
