Crossword Genius

Leave wrapping right round bird (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

parrot

'bird' is the definition.
(I know that parrot is a type of bird)

'leave wrapping right round' is the wordplay.
'leave' becomes 'part' (parting means leaving or separating).
'wrapping' is an insertion indicator.
'right round' becomes 'ro' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'part' going around 'ro' is 'PARROT'.

(Other definitions for parrot that I've seen before include "Squawking bird" , "Avian mimic" , "One repeating" , "Raucous bird" , "Repeat unintelligently" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
