Men in a boat? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eight

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'men in' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both quantities as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'a boat?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eight that I've seen before include "Mathematical cube" , "Set of rowers" , "power of two" , "Number of the April rainers" , "Two fours" .)
