Crossword Genius

Old couple in Split, dancing perhaps (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

footwork

'dancing perhaps' is the definition.
(dancing requires fancy footwork)

'old couple in split' is the wordplay.
'old' becomes 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English).
'couple' becomes 'two' (two people or things).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'split' becomes 'fork' (I've seen this before).
'o'+'two'='otwo'
'otwo' placed within 'fork' is 'FOOTWORK'.

(Another definition for footwork that I've seen is " Skilful manoeuvring".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
