One playing a two-leg match? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eleven

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'one playing a two-leg' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'match?' is the second definition.
The answer and definition can be both groups as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I can't see?

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eleven that I've seen before include "Time for the mid-morning tea break?" , "Number killed in the Peterloo massacre" , "Smallest positive three-syllable integer" , "Football team; number" , "XI as Roman numeral" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
