Piece of rope left on an overturned cart (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lanyard

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'piece of rope' is the definition.
'lanyard' can be an answer for 'rope' (I've seen this before). I am not certain of the 'piece of' bit.

'left on an overturned cart' is the wordplay.
'left' becomes 'l' (common abbreviation).
'on' means one lot of letters go next to another (in a down clue, letters appear on others).
'overturned' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'cart' becomes 'dray' (a cart without sides for delivering heavy loads).
'dray' reversed gives 'yard'.
'l'+'an'+'yard'='LANYARD'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lanyard that I've seen before include "Short rope used as a fastening" , "Cord worn round neck" , "Ribbon or cord around neck" , "Dawdler" , "Cord worn around the neck by Boy Scout" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
