grew

'rose' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'sounded triumphant making a hundred grand' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'grand' could be 'g' (G is short for grand as in a thousand) and 'g' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'rew' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for grew that I've seen before include "Sprouted" , "Got bigger" , "Increased in size" , "Rose" , "Developed, matured" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
