Crossword Genius

Small step — and where a famous one took place? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

space

'place?' is the definition.
(I know that blank space can be written as space)

'small step' is the wordplay.
'small' becomes 's' (abbreviation - e.g. clothes size).
'step' becomes 'pace' (pace is a kind of step).
's'+'pace'='SPACE'

'and where a famous one took' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

(Other definitions for space that I've seen before include "Free area" , "Empty area, may be outer" , "Emptiness" , "-- Capsule; -- bar" , "Room; gap" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
