Spot and point to how birds eat corn (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

speck

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'spot' is the definition.
(I know that speck is a type of spot)

'point to how birds eat corn' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'point' could be 's' (South) and 's' is found in the answer.
'eat' could be 'peck' (pecking is a kind of eating) and 'peck' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for speck that I've seen before include "Small mark" , "Dot" , "Tiny spot" , "Small particle" , "Bit of dust" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Telegraph.
