The pet of a hot-headed female from Amsterdam? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hamster

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the pet' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a hot-headed female from amsterdam?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'a' is found in the answer.
'hot' could be 'h' (abbreviation, eg on taps) and 'h' is found in the answer.
'female' could be 'ms' (Ms. is an example) and 'ms' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ter' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hamster that I've seen before include "Animal" , "Small pet rodent with pouched cheeks" , "Rodent with large cheek pouches" , "Pet rodent, may be golden" , "Rodent often kept as pet" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
