Crossword Genius

Try and throw a young bird (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gosling

'a young bird' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'try and throw' is the wordplay.
'try' becomes 'go' (both can mean an attempt).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'throw' becomes 'sling' (chuck means throw as does sling).
'go'+'sling'='GOSLING'

(Other definitions for gosling that I've seen before include "Young waterbird" , "Little bird" , "Young bird" , "Young goose" .)
