Crossword Genius

Unfeeling Cockney lacking skill, we hear? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

artless

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'unfeeling' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'cockney lacking skill we hear?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'lacking' could be 'less' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'less' is found within the answer.
'skill' could be 'art' (both can mean a talent) and 'art' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for artless that I've seen before include "Without guile or sophistry" , "as an empty gallery" , "Without pretension" , "Free from cunning" , "Simple, unaffected" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
