Tapering pieces with pointed extremities (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wedges

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tapering pieces' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'with pointed extremities' is the wordplay.
'with' becomes 'w' (abbreviation).
'pointed extremities' becomes 'edges' (edge is a kind of extremity. I am not sure about the 'pointed' bit.).
'w'+'edges'='WEDGES'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for wedges that I've seen before include "They taper to a thin edge" , "Shoves in between other objects, packs tightly" , "Golf irons with weighted heads and angled faces" , "Thrusts or packs tightly among other things" , "They taper from a thick to a thin end" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
