'where our dumb friends' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'dance for the customers?' is the wordplay.
'dance' becomes 'hop' (hop is a kind of dance).
'for' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'the customers?' becomes 'pets' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'hop' put after 'pets' is 'PET SHOP'.
